A goal of organic agriculture is to halt the devastation caused by humans. But today we find larger and larger farms—industrial-sized farms with their diesel footprints—growing in a manner they call organic in order to meet the rising tide of consumer demand. Alas, organic agriculture alone provides no cure for the ailing Earth.
Biodynamics is a science of life-force with recognition of the basic principles at work in nature. It is a timeless approach to agriculture which takes these principles into account to bring about balance and healing for the Earth. Biodynamics is a spiritual-ethical-ecological approach to agriculture, food production, and nutrition which integrates precise observation of natural phenomena.
Biodynamic farmers strive to create a diversified, balanced farm ecosystem that generates health and fertility as much as possible from within the farm itself. This ecosystem typically includes animal husbandry. Domestic animals in our past include chickens, turkeys, sheep, pigs, and cows. I use the word domestic, but at times these animals can behave in a rather wild manner escaping from their designated locations and causing havoc of all sorts. We do not have farm animals on our property at this time as we feel we have our hands full simply maintaining our CSA gardens. We are dedicated to doing what we feel we do best!
Biodynamics treats the Earth as a living being, and describes the evolution of humanity and the kingdoms of nature. Biodynamic agriculture emphasizes the holistic development and interrelationships of the soil and plants as a self-sustaining system. Robert has always fertilized our blueberry bushes with organic leaf mulch from the wild. We call this action a biodynamic agriculture practice!
Biodynamic practitioners recognize and strive to work in cooperation with the subtle influences of the wider cosmos on soil, plant and animal health. On our Fairview family farm we have always known it is easier to work with nature than to try and fight it—but it is nice to have a fancy word for the relationship!
